More a destination than retail space, Hyundai’s Motorstudio redefines the automobile experience with a single material, steel. Rather than try to add design to a venue for a trend-driven industry, Suh Architects chose to speak about the material of its origins. From molten metal to plates of steel, to cars, pipes, and then back again to scrap, the building is an expression of Hyundai’s ‘Zero to zero’ initiative to recycle and produce its own steel.
The Motorstudio thus became a unique opportunity for Suh Architects to create not only the building’s architecture, interior and graphics, but also its entire program. From phosphate-coated plates to industrial pipes to LED panels to ‘ribbon’ display platforms to racecar prototypes, the Motorstudio’s main spaces reflect the diversity of Hyundai’s steel’s applications. The double-height lobby features an artist installation program exploring the relationship between the city and its cars and dwellers. The auto-design library, R&D exhibits, and children’s playspaces occupy its upper three floors, inviting families and car-enthusiasts alike. Its upper floors feature a DIY customization program for its latest models that have out-sold all other retail stores nationwide. Nine custom-designed, specially-reinforced car-rotators ‘skewer’ full-scale cars to display the undercarriages and bodies of latest models; the building’s facade becomes an urban-scale display of cars as objects of desire and sustainability.
Boldly situating itself across from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai’s Motorstudio has thus begun a new conversation with its customers, rebranding itself through its unique architecture and programs.
현대 모터스튜디오는 내로라하는 유명 수입자동차 전시장들이 위치한 강남구 신사동 도산대로 사거리에서 국내 자동차 기업의 자동차 판매 및 홍보를 위해 지어졌다.
서아키텍츠는 건물의 외부 디자인은 물론 내부의 인테리어 디자인, 건축물의 픽토그램(Pictogram) 및 사이니지(Signage) 등의 그래픽디자인, 층별 컨텐츠 개발 등 현대 모터스튜디오의 하드웨어와 소프트웨어를 넘나드는 종합적이고 포괄적인 디자인을 하였다.
현대사회에서 자동차는 우리 인류의 중요한 교통수단으로 인류와 함께 진화하였다. 21세기를 맞이하여 자동차는 더 이상 교통수단만이 아니라 우리 일상 생활의 중요한 부분이 되었다. 따라서 우리 일상 생활에서 이루어지는 많은 것들을 중심으로 각 층의 컨텐츠를 개발하여 매장을 찾는 고개들로 하여금 보다 자연스럽게 자동차와 함께 하는 공간을 만들었다.
현대 모터스튜디오의 디자인은 현대자동차그룹의 “Zero to Zero”라는 친환경 순환 기반의 개념에서 출발한다. 제철소에서 나오는 쇳물이 강판이 되고, 강판을 가공하여 최첨단 자동차가 탄생하는 것처럼, 자동차에 사용되는 재료들이 지속적으로 순환하는 모습을 공간으로 표현하였다. 이는 현대 모터스튜디오가 미래와 변화에 대한 새롭고 능동적인 도전 정신을 갖고 있음을 상징한다.
건물의 외관은 레노베이션(Renovation)이 주는 건물의 구조적, 공간적 제약과 타사의 수입자동차 매장과 경쟁해야 하는 여건 속에서 현대 모터스튜디오에 전시된 자동차들이 자연스럽게 강조될 수 있도록 저철분 유리에 점(Dot)으로 형성된 프릿 패턴(Frit Pattern)을 그래픽적으로 표현하여 디자인하였다.
내부는 배선용 강관이 만들어내는 다이나믹한 선의 형태로 가공되지 않은 재료에서 나올 수 있는 새로운 가능성과 무한한 역동성을 표현했다. 반복되는 자동차 조립 공정처럼 수없이 반복되는 파이프의 연결 고리들은 현대자동차의 정밀성과 정교함을 나타낸다.
현대 모터스튜디오에서 처음으로 선 보이는 카로테이터(Car rotator)는 현대자동차의 품질을 고객에게 보다 자신 있게 표현하기 위한 수단으로 180도 회전하며 자동차의 모든 디테일을 고객이 볼 수 있도록 디자인 하였다. 또한, 1층 전시공간과 건물의 내, 외부를 연결시켜주는 114개의 LFD 미디어 월에는 유명 아티스트들과의 지속적인 협업으로, 자동차와 일상 생활의 관계를 추상적으로 표현한 영상을 통하여 고객과 유기적으로 교감하여 자연스런 만남을 이루고자 했다.
기존의 건물구조를 유지하는 레노베이션 프로젝트이지만 단순히 차량을 판매하는 자동차 영업장에서 그치지 않고, 현대자동차그룹의 브랜드 방향성이 표현되고 느낄 수 있는 공간이기를 의도하였다. 현대자동차만의 독특한 컨텐츠를 보여주고, 새로운 고객 응대 서비스를 접목하여 매장을 찾는 고객들이 자동차와 직접적인 경험을 할 수 있는 ‘고객 소통 공간’이 완성 되었다.
